Angry Birds Transformers is the tenth installment in the Angry Birds series, a crossover between Angry Birds and Transformers, featuring battles between the “Autobirds and Deceptihogs” (Angry Birds versions of Autobots & Decepticons) in a Side-scrolling Shoot ‘em up video game published by Rovio Entertainment with collaboration from Hasbro. The game was released on October 15, 2014 for iOS, released on October 30, 2014 for Android. The release includes related licensed merchandise and a toy line from Hasbro. The game’s catchphrase is “Birds Disguised as Robots in Disguise”.
The EggSpark has crashed into the surface of Piggy Island and the birds and pigs have turned into the Transformers. Unfortunately, it has also turned the eggs into the EggBots, which are turning all pigs into Transformers and then turning non-living things into towers that want to destroy life. The Autobirds and Deceptihogs must put their differences aside to destroy the transformed pigs and then capture the mischievous EggBots.
The goal is to survive through the run, since failure to survive results in zero destroyed pigs and having zero armor. Pigs can be eliminated by shooting at them, but is easier to defeat them when shooting at the structures or making TNT explode. Since the game is a side-scroller, pigs who have gone out the screen can no longer be eliminated. The player can use the user’s Facebook friends unlocked characters to assist in fighting and levels.
Coins may be collected either during runs, or simply by waiting and collecting coins that generate over time from freed areas. The game has beach, forest, desert and urban city levels. Some levels or features can be only unlocked when the player has eliminated a particular number of pigs, collected enough coins or upgraded enough Transformers. As of January 2015, the last Transformer is available to unlock at Rank 150.
The game is the fourth game in the franchise to be compatible with Hasbro’s Telepods, a toy line also used in other Angry Birds games such as Angry Birds Star Wars II. When using Telepods, it can summon the toy’s Transformer, and either boost its power or recharge its armor. It is necessary to scan the toy’s QR code each time after the app is closed since the application will “forget” the Telepods the user has previously scanned in.
In the game, there are six Autobirds and five Deceptihogs, but some are more than one transformer. The six birds are Red, Chuck, Terence, Hal, Bubbles, and Stella as Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus, Bumblebee, Heatwave and Sentinel Prime, Grimlock, Jazz and Arcee, in respective order. The five pigs in the game are the King Pig, Corporal Pig, Mustache Pig, Chef Pig, and Minion Pig as Bludgeon and Megatron and Brawl, Galvatron, Lockdown, Soundwave and Soundblaster, and Starscream, in respective order. In the comic spin off of the game, the birds Bomb and the Blues play the roles of Drift and Bluestreak respectively, although they are not yet playable.
Angry Birds Transformers received generally positive reviews, with a Metacritic score of 72/100 based on 13 reviews. The Guardian praised that the game appeals to Transformers fans, while also providing more proof that the Angry Birds can fit neatly into new stories and game genres, while the downside there are timers of multiple hours to upgrade a Transformer, however gems (slowly earned or purchased with real money) make the upgrade happen instantly.
