When our children are small, phrases like “my new BFF is…”, “I love …. and he loves me” and “I am going on a date with…” are very common, and sweetly innocent. As they cross a certain age, perhaps as young as 8 or 9 these days, that innocence starts to get chipped away and is replaced with the foundations of what will be there adult relationships. It can certainly be scary for the parent, and there really are no right answers to what to allow and when to put your foot down. The age and maturity of your own child, and most likely your own experiences will dictate when you feel the time is right.
