All of us that own a smartphone such as an iPhone or a Galaxy have likely let our children play with it, either for fun, education or a moment of piece. Using an iPhone is in itself a debatable point, but with this question, Are They Old Enough wants to know when is appropriate for them own one.
Having a phone of their own comes with a great deal of responsibility. They are not cheap and they are breakable, but perhaps more importantly, they are a gateway to the Internet in all it’s wonderful glory and its scariness.
Implied with owning a smartphone is the idea that they will have unsupervised access to it. Most allow you to set content ratings to screen out the worst of things, but even innocent apps like Tumblr can lead to a minefield of corruption and pornography. Counter, having a phone with them gives them a degree of security – in an emergency they can call you, they can reach their friends and with tools like ‘Find My iPhone’, you can quietly keep an eye on their whereabouts.
So we ask you, are they old enough to own a smartphone?
